The Challenge:

We want more high school students to volunteer in schools and in their communities.
How can we make that happen?

According to studies from Opportunity Nation, a bipartisan, national campaign comprising more than 350 cross-sector organizations, students who volunteer are more likely to graduate and to succeed in future careers.  Their volunteerism builds stronger, more vibrant communities with healthier local economies. IEI’s own Civic Health Index framed both a challenge and an opportunity: though only 1 in 5 young North Carolinians will volunteer in the next year, all stand to benefit from exposure to the workforce, development of social skills, and improved professional networks. We believe our young citizens have the knowledge, the ability, and the motivation to make their generation the most active cohort in North Carolina, and our  applicants validated those thoughts.

THE prize competition:

The 2016 LGFCU Emerging Issues High School Prize for Innovation challenges teams of high school students to create innovative, exciting proposals for successfully encouraging volunteerism by high school-aged students, particularly those who are at-risk of dropping out.

grand prize winner chosen by online open vote:

Our expert judges narrowed the field of applicants to three phenomenal teams for your consideration. Friends, family, and partners of IEI can cast their vote here. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced at the 2016 Emerging Issues Forum on February 8th. The winning team will receive $5000 to help implement their idea!

The Institute for Emerging Issues extends special thanks to our prize sponsor,
the Local Government Federal Credit Union!
